Our Review
Power BI is Microsoft's answer to Tableau, and it has become one of the most popular business intelligence tools worldwide — particularly in organizations already using Microsoft products. After building dashboards for sales tracking, financial reporting, and operational monitoring, we found Power BI excellent for its price point and tight Microsoft integration.
How to Use Power BI
Getting Started with Power BI
Download Power BI Desktop (free) from powerbi.microsoft.com. The free desktop version is fully featured — you can connect to data, build reports, and create dashboards without any cost. Start with a simple dataset (Excel file or CSV) and explore the drag-and-drop interface.
Building Your First Dashboard
Connect to your data source using "Get Data," then drag fields from the Fields pane onto the canvas. Power BI suggests visualizations based on the fields you select — try it as a starting point. Build individual visuals (bar charts, line graphs, KPIs), then arrange them into a cohesive dashboard layout. Use slicers to add interactive filters.
DAX Basics
DAX (Data Analysis Expressions) is Power BI's formula language for custom calculations. Start with simple measures: total revenue = SUM(Sales[Amount]), year-over-year growth = a percentage comparison. The DAX reference guide on Microsoft's documentation is comprehensive. You don't need to master DAX immediately — basic calculations cover most needs initially.
Sharing and Collaboration
To share dashboards with others, you need a Power BI Pro license ($10/user/month). Publish your report to the Power BI Service, then share via links or embed in SharePoint or Teams. For organizations using Microsoft 365, Power BI integrates seamlessly with the entire ecosystem.
